Chandler History

In 1891, veterinary surgeon, Dr. Alexander John Chandler settled on a ranch south of Mesa. He was studying the art of irrigation engineering in the hope of developing property of his own one day. He had acquired 18,000 acres of land by 1900, and began coming up with plans for a town on what was then known as the Chandler Ranch. The same year that Chandler High School was established in 1912, the townsite office opened.

Agriculture was the primary business in Chandler. Cotton, corn, and alfalfa were the primary crops that were grown. There were ostrich farms, during the 1910s to cater to the demand for feathers used in women's hats during those years. Due to this demand the legacy of the ostrich farms would be remembered by the annual Ostrich Festival.

Chandler has had it's ups and downs, including a ride through the Great Depression, but has grown into quite a city.
