Prescott is the county seat of Yavapai County The towns of Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Prescott, make up the whatis called the "Tri-City". These three government entities work together on projects of mutual interest. Prescott is noticing moderate and upper-level housing developments, and the weather conditions are very favorable. Being cooler than the lower southern areas of the state without the harsh winters found at higher altitudes, Prescott is an ideal town to settle in.
In 1863, Prescott was once a small mining town near the Lynx Creek. When Arizona became a territory in 1864, Prescott was named the Territorial Capital until 1889. The City is named after William Hickling Prescott, an author whose writings were famous during the Civil War.
In 1863 this town was made the capital of the Arizona Territory in order keep the power government far from Confederate sympathizers. The Territorial Capital was moved to Tucson in 1867. Prescott again became the Territorial Capital in 1877, when the capital was changed to Phoenix in 1889.
In the early part of 1900, downtown Prescott was devastated by major fires in the area. The entire downtown area was subsequently rebuilt in brick to avoid such a catastrophe in the future.
