Scottsdale History

 
Scottsdale was originally inhabited by Hohokam, an ancient Native American civilization from 300 BC to 1400 AD They farmed the land and built one of the most advanced irrigation canals the world has ever known. When the Hohokam lef the land, they vanished without a trace.

The Pima where the next society to inhabit the area until Jack Swilling and followers arrived in 1868. In 1888U.S. Army Chaplain, Winfield Scott, paid $2.50 an acre for 640 acres of land where Scottsdale is now located. the town was first known as Orangedale and later changed to Scottsdale in 1894. In 1951 Scottsdale was officially incorporated.
